Decayed, broken or worn teeth must be restored to consider one's teeth "healthy." Decay is a disease process and must be removed from a tooth prior to the tooth being restored. Untreated decay can lead to very painful and unhealthy consequences. There are many ways to restore the teeth once decay is removed. The most conservative way to restore a tooth is with a bonded white filling. If extensive decay is present or if the remaining tooth structure is inadequate, a partial covering for the front of the tooth called a veneer, or a complete covering for the tooth, called a crown, may be indicated. If teeth show signs of excessive wear, a TMJ disorder may be present. Some individuals clench or grind their teeth during periods of stress or high levels of anxiety. Often times, these individuals are unaware of their habits until fractures or excessive wear of the teeth become evident. Fortunately, Dr. Ingles can help people in need of TMJ treatment.
Bleeding or swollen gums can be signs of periodontal disease. Loose teeth or a change in your 'bite' may be signs of a periodontal problem. Plaque is the primary cause of gum disease and must be professionally removed to prevent a bad situation from getting worse! Sensitivity to cold or sweets can be a sign that there is excessive plaque buildup around your teeth. Gum disease has been linked to many systemic disorders, such as diabetes, stroke, respiratory disease and heart disease. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with periodontal disease or suspect they may have a problem with their teeth or gums, we highly encourage them to seek our help. Periodontal disease is effectively treated in our office because we care about your health! A thorough assessment of your gums will be performed at each and every appointment made with our hygienist. Should the need arise for treatment to be initiated, Dr Ingles and your hygienist will explain to you the options available to treat the problem. Our soft tissue management approach is an individualized protocol for the treatment of periodontal disease. Through a process called scaling and root planing, our hygienist can effectively remove the plaque and calculus that causes periodontal disease. Modern therapies, such as Arestin, can be used in conjunction with the scaling and root planing to help the body fight off the bacteria causing the periodontal disease. Laser assisted periodontal therapy can be an excellent option for certain types of periodontal diseases. Our office has built a reputation on being through and prides itself on being at the forefront of technology. You can be confident when you leave our office that your dental concerns have been thoroughly addressed.
Missing teeth need to be replaced for the mouth to be considered healthy, and to allow individuals to function in a healthy manner. A proper compliment of teeth is essential for proper function during chewing, as well as during speech. Depending on whether one or more teeth are missing, there are several options to replacing teeth. A single tooth replacement is best achieved conservatively by surgically having an implant placed into the jawbone. A porcelain crown can then be fabricated to cover the implant. Many years of service can be expected of this method of tooth replacement, provided good home care and regular dental visits are followed. An implant and crown can be an excellent option to replacing a missing tooth. A second option to replacing missing teeth is a fixed appliance called a bridge. Bridges can be used to replace one or more missing teeth. By anchoring this type of appliance to the adjacent teeth of an empty space, teeth can be replaced, providing the look and feel of nature. Bridges arevery natural in appearance and feel very natural when chewing. In extreme cases of tooth loss, the teeth may be replaced with removable appliances. Either removable partial dentures, or in the case of total tooth loss, a complete denture may be indicated to replace the lost natural teeth. Removable partial dentures are 'hooked' onto the remaining teeth in a dental arch and replace any missing teeth not present. Although dentures can appear very natural, the function of a set of dentures is a step down from a fixed appliance. Often times, to improve the function or stability of a denture, the combination of an implant and a denture is recommended.
